Why Use Polyester Resin to Manufacture Sculptures?

I was always asked by our business partners about the type of resin material we use to manufacture sculptures, whether it is safe for home use, and why we choose polyester resin.

So why use polyester resin to manufacture sculptures?

As a safe material for producing home decor sculptures, polyester resin is a good choice for manufacturing medium and small-sized indoor sculptures due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of use.

In this article, we will share the knowledge related to polyester resin sculpture from a Chinese supplier’s perspective.

What is Polyester Resin?

Polyester resin is a type of thermosetting plastic made up of unsaturated polyester resin, diluents, catalysts, and fillers. At room temperature, it has a liquid consistency and can be solidified into a hard and durable material through chemical reactions. Polyester resin has excellent chemical stability, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation properties. It can be tailored for different applications by adding pigments, thickeners, and defoamers. In the sculpture manufacturing process, we commonly use unsaturated polyester resin due to its excellent fluidity and moldability, it can be cast into various shapes in a short time with enough strength.

What is Unsaturated Polyester Resin?

Unsaturated polyester resin is a type of polyester resin, and it’s used to create small to medium-sized sculptures. It is an ideal material due to its ability to quickly solidify through methods such as pouring, spraying, or brushing, and its glossy finish and pliability make it well-suited for carving and embellishing.

Why Choose Unsaturated Polyester Resin for Sculpture Production?

  1. Easy to process and mold: it’s has a low viscosity and a longer curing time, making it easy to mold and shape into various sizes and shapes for sculptures.
  2. Excellent chemical stability: it has outstanding chemical stability, allowing it to resist erosion from various chemicals and UV rays, ensuring the long use-life of sculptures.
  3. Good wear resistance: the surface of unsaturated polyester resin is hard, with good wear and scratch resistance, which can maintain the long-term beauty and integrity of sculptures.
  4. Colorability and processability: it can be mixed with various pigments and fillers to achieve colorful effects and textures. Additionally, it can be further processed through various methods such as spraying, polishing, and carving.

Unsaturated Polyester Resin Sculpture Manufacturing Process

  1. Product design: the design team or oversea business partner provides a 3D file.
  2. Model making: we commonly use 3D-printed models.
  3. Mold making: create the necessary mold based on the 3D-printed model.
  4. Casting: cast prepared polyester resin into the mold, and remove molded sculpture once it is fully cured.
  5. Polishing: try to fix imperfect casted sculpture to necessary perfection.
  6. After-treatment: mainly about resin sculpture surface treatment, and some after-coming work.
